Academie Tien introduces a unique approach to education and community. Housed in a brand-new school building, it offers an innovative alternative to traditional schooling. While it primarily serves as a secondary school, students from year 7 and year 8 are also welcome. It’s a space where everyone can feel at home, with a courtyard designed as a green, inviting hub open to the neighborhood. We were thrilled to creatively bring nature into this inspiring environment.

The Challenge

Situated in the vibrant Leidsche Rijn district of Utrecht, Academie Tien is a standout project. Not only is it Utrecht’s largest secondary school, including 1800 students across a 11700 m² campus, but it also stands as an architectural highlight on Berlijnplein. The challenge was to enrich this remarkable building with interior landscaping while respecting the architect’s vision and maintaining the building’s functionality.

In addition, the school requested specialized items, such as planting tables, pruning shears, pots, plant carts and watering cans. These are used as educational tools in the greenhouse situated on the outdoor courtyard, where students learn how to look after plants, a hands-on lesson in sustainability and the future of nature.

The Creative Plan

Our team set out to transform Academie Tien into a green oasis by seamlessly integrating nature into the building’s design. Key features include:

  • Indoor greenery: A serene indoor garden lines the path to the gym, featuring large, naturally placed leafy plants. Classrooms come alive with thoughtfully placed interior plants, adding warmth and vitality to learning spaces.
  • Mobile plant displays: In hallways and study areas on the first floor, we introduced mobile plant containers. These were designed to complement the architecture while preserving the multifunctionality of the spaces.
  • Impressive centerpieces: The study center on the first floor is home to a striking Kentia palm, serving as a visual and atmospheric focal point.
  • Custom furniture with greenery: Near the doors leading to the outdoor courtyard, a custom-built bench doubles as a planter. This five-meter-long centerpiece is filled with exotic leafy plants, fostering a strong connection to nature.
  • Memorial tree: On the second floor, at the heart of the building, a Bucida tree stands surrounded by a custom-built seating area. This tree holds special significance, serving as a living tribute to lost colleagues and students.

The Result

Following its grand opening in 2024, Academie Tien became a place where education and nature co-exist. The carefully integrated green elements not only add beauty and tranquility but also enhance the well-being of students and staff.

Our maintenance team ensures that this vibrant greenery continues to flourish, while the planting tables and tools inspire students to connect with nature. Perhaps this hands-on experience will spark a passion in the next generation, encouraging them to join the green industry and contribute to a sustainable future.
