The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is not only one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands, but also a leading employer in the Northern Netherlands with as many as 13,000 employees. This iconic institution is constantly on the move, and not just in terms of medical progress. Since the acquisition of Ten Brinke Interieurbeplanting from Hydro Noord in 2017, we are the proud supplier of all interior planting, moss walls and plant walls within this impressive hospital.
The challenge: a harmony of nature and architecture
The challenge at the UMCG was to seamlessly integrate greenery into an environment designed to promote rest and healing, without detracting from the building’s modern architecture. The hospital’s glass-covered streets form the central nervous system of the facility, along which patients and staff move from one department to another. It was up to us to transform these spaces into a green oasis, where every step is an invitation to rest and recuperate.
The creative plan: green accents for well-being and sustainability
Together with the UMCG, we realised several green projects, including impressive moss walls, plant walls and strategically placed large Strelitzias. These green elements were carefully chosen to be not only attractive, but also functional. The large plants provide natural partitions and create seating areas within the hospital’s large, open halls.
The result: a hospital that breathes
Walking through the streets of the UMCG feels like a refreshing stroll through a park. The carefully placed green walls and planters bring a piece of nature inside, making a tangible difference to the atmosphere and well-being of both patients and staff. The green walls in the Fountain Patio have been a topic of conversation among visitors for years. These objects contribute not only to a more beautiful appearance, but also to reducing stress and promoting creativity. And for that, Thies Drint (internal green care) and Ronald Verbree (facility manager) were awarded the UMCG Sustainability Award in 2022! A wonderful crown on the work they do for more sustainable healthcare.
Working together for a greener future
The cooperation with the UMCG goes beyond supplying plants and walls. We support and learn from each other. The UMCG has its own team that works almost every day to keep the greenery thriving through maintenance. This synergy is a great example of how we are building a more sustainable, greener future together with our customers.
With expansion and renovation projects planned until 2035, we look forward to continuing to build together with the UMCG on the future of healthcare in the Northern Netherlands, where greenery continues to play a central role.
