A modern office is more than just a desk and a computer. That’s what ICTU – the Dutch government’s executive consultancy – proves with their redesigned workspace in The Hague. Their aim was to create a working environment focused on hybrid work, collaboration and wellbeing. Plants played a key role – both visually and functionally.
A natural flow
From the outset, it was clear: the greenery had to do more than just decorate. The plants were designed to divide space, add tranquillity, and enhance atmosphere. In the open-plan areas, they help balance interaction and focus. Thanks to smart configurations – freestanding, as dividers or integrated into bespoke furniture – a natural flow emerged throughout the space.
From concept to character
The concept sketches gave direction, but the execution brought the vision to life. A bold mix of plant types was chosen – from lush foliage to playfully branched species – creating an urban jungle atmosphere. Varying heights helped define the mood in each zone: open and low where transparency was needed, higher and shielding where privacy was desired.
Green with a circular core
Sustainability was key to ICTU’s vision. That’s why Plantinum planters made from 100% recycled plastic were selected – a circular choice in line with their long-term ambitions. The three custom moss walls reinforce this commitment. Realised in collaboration with Moswens, they add visual impact and peace of mind. More than decoration, these walls are statement pieces that contribute to acoustics and spatial comfort.
A living identity
Throughout the building, the planting stands out – subtly in some areas, boldly in others. The entrance is a striking welcome with a tall Kentia and lush foliage plants. Informal zones feature clustered planters for a relaxed feel. Along the walkways, custom-built planters catch the light – and the eye – without dominating the space.
At ICTU, planting wasn’t an afterthought. It was a starting point for spatial experience. By including greenery from the very beginning, they created a workplace that not only functions – but also comes alive.
